Muscat Eye Laser Center wins international acclaim at top ophthalmologists’ forum

December 10, 2012

10 December 2012, MUSCAT:  Muscat Eye Laser Center’s groundbreaking use of a combination of technologies to surgically treat patients with corneal eye problems has won the admiration of the world’s top forum of ophthalmologists.

A poster presentation made by the Sultanate’s leading provider of surgical eye-care services at the recent joint meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology attracted acclaim for the pioneering nature of the refractive surgical technique employed by the Center to amazing effect.

By combining Lasik and corneal cross-linking technologies in a procedure dubbed ‘LASIK XTRA’, the Center was able to produce remarkable refractive outcomes in patients without any discomfort to them. Moreover, corneal strength was found to be restored after LASIK surgery in a tremendously beneficial outcome of this technique.

The poster presentation outlining the innovative elements of this surgical approach made a shortlist of the year’s best exhibits presented at the annual event in Chicago in November. A total of 562 posters exhibited by ophthalmologists from around the world were evaluated by the Academy’s board for their innovation, relevance and scientific value. Muscat Eye Laser Center’s exhibit won pride of place alongside a handful of equally outstanding poster presentations adjudged by the panel as the year’s best contributions of value to the ophthalmic medical community.
A place on the Academy’s honour list of top poster presentations pays testimony to the international standing of Muscat Eye Laser Center as a centre of excellence in refractive eye-care services on the global ophthalmology stage. With leading professionals from around the world in attendance, it was also a demonstration of the cutting-edge skills and capabilities of Oman’s best-known eye clinic.

The revolutionary technique is the result of a research based initiative spearheaded by Dr Dario A. Victoria and a team of ophthalmic surgeons at the Center that include Juan Guillermo Gaviria, Sanak Roy Choudhury and Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez. LASIK XTRA centres on the simultaneous use of LASIK and accelerated corneal cross-linking to reduce the risks of post-operative keratectasia in patients with risk factors.

“LASIK XTRA is a new concept of refractive surgery based on the combination of LASIK performed with the aid of our state-of-the-art Amaris 750s laser, and corneal cross linking undertaken with the equally sophisticated Avedro device. In our study, we demonstrated the refractive outcome of our patients and also analysed the modifications on the corneal stroma after the procedure, detected by state-of-the-art laser confocal microscopy. This is a revolutionary microscope which allows us to study the cornea at a cellular level due to its very high magnification. The study is significant because it demonstrates that post LASIK XTRA, the patients show excellent results similar to those achieved with LASIK and Z-LASIK, with the additional benefit of cross linking, which strengthens the cornea,” Dr Victoria commented.
