GMC leads industry with new rear seat reminder in 2017 Acadia

January 16, 2017

A simple reminder can help prevent tragedy. Recent incidents in the Middle East have highlighted the need to remind parents and pet owners to check the backseat in case they forget they are not travelling solo. The 2017 GMC Acadia has incorporated this new safety upgrade(Rear Seat Reminder) that is an industry first and has become a talking point

15 November 2016, Muscat: The launch of the all-new GMC 2017 Acadia has received great reviews. But what has become a talking point is the new safety upgrade that is an industry-first. The rear seat alert system has been designed to prevent the driver from inadvertently leaving children and pets behind in the vehicle that could prove fatal especially when the temperatures soar in the summer in this part of the world. This has struck a chord with public in general, especially in light of recent incidents that have been reported.

The Rear Seat Reminder works by monitoring the Acadia’s rear doors. The feature is intended to activate when either rear door is opened and closed within ten minutes before the vehicle is started, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running. Once the vehicle is switched off, there will be an audible chime and a visual message will be displayed in the centre of the Acadia’s speedometer to check the rear seat before departing. Most important, the rear seat reminder is activated automatically and the driver does not have to remember to turn it on.

The main impetus to introduce this feature was to help parents with children. While it seems impossible that a parent could forget a child in the back seat, accidents can happen when there is a change in usual routine; parents are fatigued or absent-mindedly, leave the vehicle while talking on the phone. As temperatures in vehicles can quickly rise to dangerous levels in a very short time, realisation of something being amiss can come a bit too late.

“This new safety feature makes the 2017 Acadia even more family-focused. It serves as an important reminder for busy parents to always check the rear seats before exiting the car, however busy or preoccupied they may be at that moment,” states Virendra Aggarwal, CEO – Moosa Abdul Rahman and Co LLC.

The latest 2017 GMC Acadia is a reimagined crossover offering customers a midsize crossover positioned between the compact Terrain and full-size Yukon. Available in three distinct trim levels that include SLE, SLT and Denali, the starting price is from RO 13699. Some of the main highlights of the new Acadia are that it is 318 kg lighter that pays dividends with fuel efficiency; its shorter length and narrower width enable greater manoeuvrability; the new standard 3.6L V-6 engine is more powerful and efficient and is plugged in with available phone integration technology through GMC’s available IntelliLink system that makes for easy connect to smartphones. However, the safety features continue to hold the spotlight with Front Pedestrian Braking and Surround Vision Camera along with the standard rear seat alert. The strong feedback on the Rear Seat Reminder has resulted in General Motors considering rolling out the technology in other vehicles as well.
