Blackberry use AES or Triple DES encryption when integrated with BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  All data packets flowing out from a blackberry device are compressed and encrypted.

What if users don’t want to be too connected?

Users have the option to disable the data service and just use the smartphone as a GSM.

What makes Blackberry handhelds different than other products?

BlackBerry gives true push email.  Whilst most of the devices in the market pull emails from the server, Blackberry handhelds remains unique as the BlackBerry server pushes the mails to the handheld meaning that the device doesn’t request anything from the server.
